Classic margarita

Classic dry, citrusy and ice-cold margarita, with tequila, triple sec, fresh lime and half a rim of salt to control each sip. Preparation: 5 min | Total: 5 min | Yield: 1 drink | Difficulty: Easy | Type: Drink with tequila.

Margarita clássica clara em taça com borda de sal e rodela de limão, com coqueteleira e limões ao fundo.

The formula of this Margarita keeps the tequila in the spotlight, uses orange liqueur to round off the acidity of the lime and limits the salt to half the rim, letting you choose between a pure sip and one with a saline touch.

Ingredients

• 50 ml 100% agave blanco tequila

• 20 ml of triple sec

• 15 ml freshly squeezed Tahiti lime juice

• 1 level teaspoon of fine salt or cocktail salt, for the half rim

• 1 thin slice of Tahiti lemon, to moisten the edge

• 1 thin slice of Tahiti lemon, to finish

• Approximately 180 g of cubed ice for blending

Preparation method

1. Chill the glass

Place the bowl in the freezer while you separate and measure the ingredients. Five minutes helps keep the drink cold for longer without requiring ice inside the glass.

2. Make the half salt border

Pass the lemon wedge only on the outer side of half the rim of the glass. Touch this part to the salt, without dipping the entire edge, and tap lightly to remove the excess. This way, the salt doesn't fall into the drink and you control how much of it goes into each sip.

3. Shake with ice

Place the tequila, triple sec and lime juice in the shaker. Add the ice, close and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds, until the outside is very cold and covered with condensation.

4. Strain and finish

Remove the glass from the freezer and strain the Margarita directly into it, without adding new ice. Finish with a lemon wedge on the edge and serve immediately.

Right spot / how to know it’s ready

The Margarita should arrive in the glass very cold, with a fresh citrus aroma and light texture. The tequila remains noticeable, the lemon brings clear acidity and the triple sec rounds off the whole without turning the drink into a syrupy drink. The half rim allows you to alternate sips with and without salt. If the liquid is watery and not very aromatic, there has been excessive dilution; if it is lukewarm, the shaker or glass lacked cooling.

Tips for the recipe to work out

Measure everything in ml

The difference of a few milliliters changes a short cocktail a lot. Use a measuring cup or small measuring cup to maintain the balance between spirit, liquor and acidity.

Squeeze the lemon freshly

The freshly squeezed juice preserves a brighter aroma and acidity. Squeeze before assembling the shaker and strain out seeds or large pieces of pulp if necessary.

Use firm ice

Cubes that are too small, brittle or already melting dilute the drink quickly. Choose well-frozen ice and shake just until the shaker is intensely cold.

Keep salt out

By moistening only the outside of the glass, you reduce the chance of salt falling into the liquid. The half rim also prevents every sip from having the same saline intensity.

Substitutions and variations

Can I use Cointreau in place of another triple sec?

Yes. Use the same 20 ml as a starting point. The sweetness and intensity of orange vary between brands of triple sec, so it's worth keeping the measure in the first preparation and adjusting for small differences in the next round, instead of changing several ingredients at the same time.

Can I use reposado tequila?

You can, but the profile changes. The reposado tends to bring more rounded and wooden notes, while the blanco leaves the citrus and fresh character of the cocktail more evident.

How to make the Margarita a little less dry?

For a smoother variation, add 5 ml of agave syrup to the shaker. This increases the sweetness and body and moves away from the classic base formula used in this recipe.

What about the frozen or Tommy's Margarita versions?

They require different dilution or sweetening logic and work better as their own recipes. It's not enough to change an ingredient and maintain the same method.

How to serve / side dishes

Serve as soon as it strains, while the drink and the glass are still very cold. The acidity and saline touch go especially well with savory snacks, guacamole, tacos and chili dishes.

Common mistakes

Why was my Margarita watery?

The most common reason is ice already melting, cubes that are too small or excessive shaker time. Use firm ice, keep ingredients cold when possible, and stop shaking as soon as the shaker is intensely chilled.

Why was it too acidic?

Check if the lemon and triple sec were measured correctly. The formula is deliberately dry and citrusy; If you prefer a sweeter profile, use the variation with 5 ml of agave syrup instead of randomly increasing the liquor.

Why did salt dominate the drink?

This usually happens when the entire rim is salted, when there is excess salt or when it falls into the bowl. Make only half a border, apply salt on the outside and remove the excess before serving.

Why did it stay warm even after beating?

Too little ice or a hot glass can quickly raise the final temperature. Use enough ice in the shaker and leave the glass chilled from the beginning of preparation.
