The base formula for this recipe follows the current International Bartenders Association reference: vodka, peach liqueur, orange and cranberry juice in a long drink mixed directly in a glass with ice. The most important point in the Brazilian adaptation is not to treat grenadine or currant syrup as if they were cranberry juice: they are much more concentrated and sweet, so they come in a much smaller volume and need dilution and a little acidity.
Ingredients
For 1 drink
• 40 ml of vodka
• 20 ml peach schnapps style peach liqueur
• 40 ml of fresh, strained orange juice
• 40 ml cranberry juice or drink
• Cubed ice, enough to fill a tall glass
• 1 half slice of orange, for decoration
• 1 cocktail cherry, optional, for garnish
Preparation method
1. Cool the glass
Fill a highball, Collins or Hurricane glass with ice cubes to near the brim. The colder the glass and the larger the cubes, the less dilution before serving.
2. Assemble the base
Pour the vodka, peach liqueur and orange juice directly over the ice. Measure liquids with a measuring cup to maintain proportion and prevent the liquor from dominating the drink.
3. Complete with cranberry
Add the cranberry and stir just two or three turns with a long spoon, enough to cool and combine. For a visual gradient like the one on the cover, pour the cranberry last and more slowly; before drinking, mix lightly to even out the flavor.
4. Finish and serve
Decorate with half an orange slice. The cherry is optional and works as a visual finish, without being part of the base formula. Serve immediately, while the ice is still firm.
Right spot / how to know it’s ready
The drink must be very cold, with a coral to pinkish color and a noticeable aroma of orange and peach. On the palate, the vodka is integrated with the fruity profile, while the cranberry adds enough acidity to prevent the peach liqueur from seeming cloying. If there is a thick layer of syrup on the bottom or overpowering sweetness, the cranberry replacement was too concentrated.
Tips for the recipe to work out
Measure instead of filling in the eye
The difference between a balanced Sex on the Beach and a sugary drink usually lies in a few milliliters of liquor or syrup. Use a jigger or small meter.
Prefer fresh, strained orange
Freshly squeezed juice gives a clearer aroma. Straining out excess pulp makes the drink cleaner and prevents a dull appearance.
Note the cranberry label
Cranberry juices and drinks vary greatly in sweetness. If the product is already very sweet, do not add sugar, grenadine or currants just to enhance the color.
Use enough ice
Little ice melts faster and can make the drink watery. Filling the glass with firm cubes helps it cool without diluting it too much in the first few minutes.
Substitutions and variations
Are cranberry, grenadine and currant equivalent?
No. Cranberry comes as a juice or fruit drink and provides about 40 ml of volume, as well as acidity and fruity flavor. Grenadine and currant syrup are concentrated syrups and much sweeter. Swapping 40 ml of cranberry for 40 ml of any of them tends to make the drink heavy and sugary.
If there is only grenadine
To replace the 40 ml of cranberry in a drink, use 10 ml of grenadine, 25 ml of very cold water and 5 ml of lemon juice. This adaptation preserves volume and returns part of the lost acidity. The flavor is different from the classic, sweeter and with a pomegranate or red fruit profile depending on the brand. If your grenadine is especially sweet, start with 7.5 ml and make up the difference with water.
If there is only currant syrup
Use the same logic: 10 ml of blackcurrant syrup, 25 ml of very cold water and 5 ml of lemon juice instead of the 40 ml of cranberry. The result usually has a more intense color and a more evident syrup flavor. If the brand is very concentrated, reduce to 7.5 ml before increasing; it's easier to add sweetness than to fix it later.
Can I use another peach liqueur?
Yes. A peach liqueur available in Brazil can fulfill the function of peach schnapps. As alcohol and sugar content vary between brands, stick to 20 ml for the first try and only adjust in a future brew if the peach is too strong or sweet.
How to serve / side dishes
Serve in a tall glass, with plenty of ice and a simple orange decoration. It's a fruity and relatively sweet cocktail, so it goes best with savory snacks, nuts, crispy potatoes or
light starters than with very sugary desserts.
How to store
Sex on the Beach must be assembled on the spot. Do not store the ready-made drink with ice, as dilution continues and the flavor loses definition. If you want to make the service ahead of time, keep the vodka and peach liqueur measured and refrigerated and keep the juices cold separately; Just bring everything together when serving.
Common mistakes
Why was my Sex on the Beach too sweet?
The most common reason is to use grenadine or currants in the same amount as the cranberry, or to work with a very sweetened cranberry and add syrup. Return to the base proportion and, if you need to replace it, dilute the syrup and add a little lemon as indicated above.
Why did it become watery quickly?
Small, partially melted or little ice accelerates dilution. Use a glass filled with firm ice and cold ingredients, and stir just enough to combine.
Why did the peach flavor disappear?
Too much orange, cranberry or syrup can cover up the 20 ml of peach liqueur. Measure all liquids and do not increase juices without also recalibrating the recipe.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to use a cocktail shaker?
No. The IBA reference is assembled directly into the glass with ice. Shaking in a cocktail shaker creates more aeration and further dilution, so it's a variation in technique, not a necessary step for this version.
Grenadine makes the drink more classic?
Not in this reference formula. Grenadine can create a deep red color and appears in bar variations, but it replaces the cranberry profile with a much sweeter syrup. To maintain balance, use little and dilute rather than trading volume for volume.
